The Lakeland Terriers are solid, sturdy, squarely proportioned dogs similar to the Welsh Terrier, but a bit smaller. This is an elegant breed with a beautiful, elongated head and straight, strongly boned legs.
The thick, hard, adult coat is resistant to bad weather and comes in many combinations of black, black & tan, reddish, red grizzle, wheat, liver & blue, grizzle, and grizzle & tan. The tan color is like straw, not rich and dark. Lakeland Terriers generally like everyone they meet and can distinguish friends from strangers. This breed is an enthusiastic breed who enjoys playing with adults or children and has a way of getting its own way making them an entertaining pet.

This breed has a thick, hard coat and sheds water. The Lakeland Terrier should have its coat plucked two or three times each year by pulling the old hair out by hand. The coat of show dogs will require more intensive grooming. This breed sheds little to no hair.
This is a very hardy breed. They are subject to no serious hereditary diseases, cataracts, lens luxation can be prone.
